Not a bad haul…
25 04 2005David Clark from Surrey, England has scored himself US$10,000 of Intel’s money by selling them a mint first edition of Electronics magazine with the original Moore’s Law quote in it. Neither Intel nor Gordon Moore had a copy of the magazine (which surprises me considering the celebrity of the quote). Intel ran a competition on eBay in the run up to it’s 40th anniversary.

Mobile 3G/WiFi hotpspot – the “StompBox”
25 04 2005From the “this is cool, but you have far too much time on your hands” dept comes the mobile 3G/WiFi hotspot powered by a car cigarette lighter. That’s right an embedded linux PC with a WiFi card and an EV-DO card all running of 12VDC.
The designers even give you the instructions on how to build your own here.

Mobile blogging is starting to become a reality
21 04 2005Came across a great little app today. Written by one of our Wellington Windows Mobile User Group, Kevin Daly. The app is called “Diarist” and is a mobile blogging client that supports both the Blogger and Metaweblog APIs. There aren’t many mobile blogging clients available, but this is quite good. Once Kevin gets the Atom API stuff working and can insert the title field it will be fantastic. Cheers, Kevin!
Check it out at Kevin’s site

Social Networking – LinkedIn
21 04 2005Darryl has introduced me to a site specialising in the social networking phenomenon. The site is called LinkedIn. It’s actually quite incredible how quickly your network of contacts increases just by adding a few well-connected people to your list. My reachable contacts jumped from 500 to over 1500 by adding only 2 contacts!

Open-source CMS system that doesn’t require a database
18 04 2005Found this very cool open-source poject in my travels a while back. Limbo is a content management system written in PHP and based on the wery popular Mambo CMS. The big difference with Limbo (or Mambo Lite as some call it) is that it will run without requiring a database. It uses text files stored on the webserver as the database. This means you can run a very professional looking CMS-based website without requiring database hosting (this means cheaper). Supports nearly all the functionality of it’s larger brother and can even use the same templates. Although it’s still in the early stages of development, what has been accomplished so far and the functionality available is very impressive. It has an administration interface where you can configure the site and supports user registration and assigning of permissions to contributing authors.
Check out my test install.

AWESOME Web Radio station!
15 04 2005Playing around with MediaPortal and it’s streaming media capability the other day (I will regale you with my experiences with MP at a later date) I came across this awesome internet radio station. It’s called “ProFM webradio”. 24 hour a day dance music from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and today. Based in the Netherlands, I think, they play an absolutely fantastic mix. I’ve been tuning in regularly over the last couple of weeks and I’ve yet to come across a segment I didn’t like, but the best stuff is on during the evening (NZ time). Keep it up guys!

Games are the fastest growing cellular application
15 04 2005The monthly report from M:Metrics shows that more than 6 million people downloaded games for their cell phones while 23 million downloaded ringtones. However, the monthly growth of downloaded games was 8.2% vs. 3% for ringtones.

Nice templates are hard to find
14 04 2005When you’re as stylistically challenged as I am, finding nice looking, un-themed (ie no inane pictures in the background (like snowflakes or peoples faces)) templates is really hard. I’m on the search at the moment for a good blog theme and all my hunting makes me really appreciate how truly stylish the stock Blogger themes really are. Kudos to the designers. Good job.
