Popularity of Ubuntu now starting to affect Debian
13 04 2005Apparently the huge popularity of the Ubuntu Linux distribution is now starting to have an effect on it’s parent distro – Debian. Originally based on Debian, Ubuntu’s popularity is now causing packages to be created that are no longer compatible with Debian. This is causing a problem in the fact that it is drawing development resource away from the core Debian distro to either fix or redo the packages, when it should be being concentrated on the next version of Debian (Sarge).
While I agree with this to a certain extent, I think it basically shows that Ubuntu has now reached a sort of critical mass, where it is not really a distro unto itself and should really no longer thought of as sitting on top of standard Debian. It’s much the same as Mandrake, which started out life as a Redhat derivative, but has been a distro in it’s own right for a number of years now. I think the developers of Debian are showing a little bit of “sour grapes” so to speak, that a Debian derivative has become more popular than the parent. But it’s really their own fault – if Debian was a bit quicker to bring out packages of the latest and greatest apps instead of being several (sometimes, major) versions behind, there wouldn’t be this search for a good stable distro with all the latest and greatest.
Also you need to think of the target market of Ubuntu – the desktop. Debian itself is not targetted at the desktop. It is targetted at the back-end. This gives rise to two completely different schools of thought regarding applications to include in the distros. Server admins want stability, not bleeding edge. Desktop users want the latest wizzy bits, and aren’t as concerned with stability (to a certain extent, then they just get pissed off and try something else).
